Welcome to the opening reception on Thursday 5 January, 2023, from 5–7 pm!

The artist is present at the gallery on Sunday, January 29 from 2–4 pm.

Still and in Between is an exhibition about making art, submerging, movement and settling by gestures and traces. Composed of ceramics, wood, paper, and a myriad of repeating elements, its works can be seen as images of making.

The exhibited works are both still and in movement. Between them, color and volume condense and evaporate. It all seems to be about being in between. The works are present physically and powerfully – yet at the same time, they fade into the exhibition space, acting as gates or completely referring to something else.

The exhibition has been supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation and the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.

Suvi Sysi (b. 1990, Nilsiä) is a visual artist based in Helsinki. The roots of her practice are in printmaking methods and paper-based works. Currently she also works with clay, wood and plaster, moving between printmaking, sculpture and painting.

Sysi works mainly with abstract installations, in which she explores time, shapes, textures, the power of color, and movement between two- and three-dimensionality. Sysi’s working processes are strongly corporeal: the way she works translates to the contents of her art. The artist often explores the boundary between finished and unfinished, looking for ways to reveal the processes of art making.

Sysi has been exhibiting her works since 2013. She completed her MFA at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki in 2020. Sysi’s works are included in the collections of, e.g., the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Saastamoinen Foundation, the Finnish State Art Commission, HUS, and the Finnish Art Society.
