In an ongoing exploration of the complex relationship between art and memory, nProjekt is proud to present the latest instalment in its “Remembrance” series: “Tokens of Remembrance”. This exhibition, a continuum of its predecessor ‘Seeds of Remembrance’, presents a collection of small yet profound artworks. Conceived by a distinguished group of Hong Kong artists, these pieces emerge as tactile vignettes of history, both private and shared.
To be unveiled at Myymälä2 in Helsinki in January 2024, Tokens of Remembrance marks a new chapter in the series. The exhibition features object-based artworks by five artists, each of whom weaves a unique narrative and legacy. These works are not just artefacts, crafted to capture fleeting moments and enduring memories.
This exhibition is the first in the series that nProjekt will unveil in 2024. The journey continues beyond Helsinki, with the second part, focusing on image-based artworks, to be shown in Bristol in March. This division between object and image-based works reflects the multifaceted nature of memory and the different media through which it can be articulated and preserved.
At the heart of ‘Tokens of Remembrance’ is the understanding that our capacity to physically carry the past is limited, despite the vastness of what we remember. In this context, artistic creation transcends remembrance and becomes a transformative process. These works of art serve not only as repositories of memory, but also as dynamic reinterpretations that allow us to continue our past in forms imbued with meaning and longevity.
Echoing the foundational philosophy of ‘Seeds of Remembrance’, which highlighted art and artefacts as conduits of memory, ‘Tokens of Remembrance’ delves deeper. It initiates a discourse on the transcendence of memory through art, reflecting on its role in not only preserving, but also reinterpreting and re-envisioning our shared heritage and personal stories.
More than a mere showcase, this exhibition is a testament to art’s enduring capacity to honour our past and sow the seeds of future growth and adaptation. It invites viewers on a reflective journey to discover how memory, in its myriad manifestations, can be distilled into artistic expressions that resonate through time and space, bridging past and future.
“Tokens of Remembrance” is not just an exhibition; it is a collective narrative, a shared odyssey and an enlightening exploration of the nature of memory, all through the transformative lens of art.
