A Conversation on Equality in the Arts from the Perspective of Disability

What keeps disabled artists on the margins, and what could open doors to the mainstream? What does inclusive curating mean? What changes are needed in institutions to promote equality? These themes will be discussed by multidisciplinary artist and professor Jenni-Juulia Wallinheimo-Heimonen, researcher of inclusive curating Silja Pasila, and EMMA’s curator Nella Aarne. The conversation will be moderated by musician Riikka Hänninen who leads the Taiteilijan taikasauva project. The event will be opened by project coordinator Sanni Virta.

The evening begins with an opening performance on the concert kantele by Sanni Virta, and after the panel, we will experience a demo of Nähdyksi dance piece by Noora Västinen and Nilas Lindell.

The event is organized in collaboration between EMMA and the Taiteilijan taikasauva project, which promotes equal opportunities for disabled and sign language artists in the cultural sector. The 18-month project is funded by the Kone Foundation and implemented by the Cultural Association of Disabled Artists, Suomen Eucrea ry.

The language of the event is Finnish. The event will include sign language interpretation.
