MUU Window
Välimerenkatu 15, Helsinki
MUU Window is a new space for contemporary art in Jätkäsaari, Helsinki, located at street level in the new student housing complex run by the Varsinaissuomalainen osakunta Student Housing Foundation. The building was inaugurated in September, and MUU’s exhibition programme will begin in October.
The first exhibition of MUU Window is Tip of the Iceberg by Helinä Hukkataival, honorary member of MUU. The show is an archaeological excavation into the career of the performance artist going back 30 years. In the video works and photographs, the artist appears immersed in her practice, whether on the streets of Rome or within the Finnish landscape.
The exhibition is a collaboration between Hukkataival and MUU. Throughout 2024, they have digitised, remastered, and re-edited material on the artist’s body of work. The project is generously supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
Performances and pop-up events will accompany the exhibition. Stay tuned for updates! @muu_helsinki
Helinä Hukkataival
Helinä Hukkataival (b. 1941) graduated as a visual arts teacher in 1966, and began exhibiting alongside her teaching in 1969. From 1990, she shifted her focus to performance art, later expanding into photography and video art. Helinä Hukkataival received the Finnish State Award for Visual Arts in 2004.
As a performance artist, Hukkataival appears in her own works, often in the role of Martha, wearing a black dress and scarf – the traditional outfit of an elderly person. The images depict Martha engaged in everyday tasks typically performed by women, tasks that too often go unnoticed.
MUU ikkuna (MUU Window)
MUU Window hosts around four or five long-term exhibitions per year, collaborating with partners including the Student Housing Foundation, and the Turku Academy of Arts. An open call for artists to exhibit in the space will be held later in the autumn.
The official name of the building is KOY Ylioppilashuone Alina, located at Välimerenkatu 15 A. Teatteri Viirus and Taidehotelli Ax are located nearby at the same street crossing.
Ylioppilashuone Alina is an apartment building constructed by the Student Housing Foundation of the Varsinaissuomalainen osakunta student nation. The members of the student nation are students and alumni of universities and higher education institutions in the Helsinki metropolitan area. Most members are from Southwest Finland, but some have other connections or affiliations to the region.
