Inkeri Halme’s works are about waiting. The paintings are set in a moment where everything stands still and the signs of change are in the air. Everything remains still, fearing that nothing will happen after all. Looking, remembering and waiting are intertwined: what was it like, what if they never return, what if there is only silence, what if…., …. and… Instead of a prophecy, Halme explores alternative futures. What if silence is not a period of waiting, but the final outcome?
Inkeri Halme reflects on the point at which the objects and elements in an artwork cease to be objects and elements and become symbols – a shared experience. She asks where the boundaries of seeing and understanding lie. Spaces are more than just places or views. They are products of historical and cultural narratives and beliefs, shaping who I am and who we are. Space is simultaneously a place and memory: what happened there – and what was left undone.
Inkeri Halme graduated from the Free Art School’s painting program in spring 2020 and is currently studying at Uniarts Helsinki’s Academy of Fine Arts. In addition to private collections, Halme’s works are included in the collections of the State Art Commission / the Finnish National Gallery, Satakuntalainen Osakunta and Sokos Hotel Torni.
