Sebastian Dumitrescu: Arrhythmia
At the moment I am working on Arrhythmia, a 31-tone piece for Fokker organ (or Lumatone keyboard) and interactive live electronics, where I am attempting to move to the next level of understanding of the harmonic syntax that I am researching in my doctoral studies: the computer, knowing in real time (through MIDI) which notes the live performer is playing, follows a dictionary of rules in order to produce notes that follow local models of the aforementioned harmonic syntax. The live performer reacts to what the computer is playing, and is in charge of the higher-level expression and form, producing a half-deterministic, statistical approach, a strings-attached system of harmony, a bunch of storytelling microtonal progressions. The composition of Arrhythmia has been supported by a grant from MES.
