A vibrant and humorous performance, described as a queer cabaret, will fill the Kiasma Theatre for one night

In this queer duet, two dykes swing between being lovers, friends, allies, and toxic exes as their games unfold, fueled by an unhinged pursuit of the epistemologies of cunnilingus. With Lez Dance, Shirly and Cajsa intended to develop the notion of “dyke camp,” which reframes the pointed kitsch of camp into the exaggerated and the puffed, the over-acted and the reaper of laughter. They take turns sharpening their blades on each other’s bodies, running with knives. A harness is used for pulling.

The queer team contributes to dyke camp amplification: the sound designer’s hours spent searching for the perfect squirt sound at the end, the set designer adorning the stage with Japan’s symbol for lesbianism – the lily, the costume designer genius creation oversize hands and heads. Indeed, as the performers roam through hyper-pleasure and dangerous play, dyke tropes have fertile space, subtext, and sexual tension in which to blossom. In this potentially frightening, aggressively awkward, and forever self-assured performance on the queer figure of the dyke, sustained by consent and desire, you are invited to sit back, giggle, and relax.

Performers

Shirley Harthey Ubilla is a Chilean-Swedish performer and choreographer based in Estocolmo. Their choreographic work focuses on dyke desires, latinidad, warping structures of power and queer realness. Abjection, exaggeration, erotica and humor are cornerstones in their work.

As a nonbinary butch dyke of color, they are highly aware of the fact that bodies matter, and this is something that drives all of their artistic work. Shirley’s interest in exploring the in-between state; when something is on the verge of transforming into something else, is ongoing. They believe that this space has the potential to make us question what boundaries are and what happens when they are about to dissolve.

Their choreographic work encourages an overlap between the imaginary, the gut feeling, and the flesh and blood. They seek to develop and evolve practices that speak of resistance with emancipatory possibilities. Shirley strongly believes that the making of art is a fragile, fierce and a badass way of figuring out how to live in the world.

Cajsa Godée (she/they) is a queer dancer and choreographer working mainly in Berlin and Stockholm. Cajsa gravitates towards exploring themes around sexuality from a queer experience. She approaches it with a touch of humor and often in an intimate setting with room for spontaneity in the meeting between herself and the audience. Both as a dancer and creator, Cajsa works with a mix of different performative practices and somatic movement practices. Her dance foundation is within groove oriented styles and club dances, especially locking and popping, and was acquired and developed in the Swedish Streetdance community.

For 15 years Cajsa has created stage work in different constellations and groups. Cajsa is one of the founding members of the dance and performance group JUCK (Thrust), initiated in 2012,  which aims to expose structures of power through the movement on thrusting. JUCK has created pieces and performed since 2015. Cajsa is currently freelancing with her own work, working as a dancer in other choreographers’ staged pieces and mentoring dance students.
