The stage performance explores the eruption of the Krakatoa volcano at the end of the 19th century. It uses sound and the alternation of dark and light to bring the distant natural disaster closer to the audience.

in English
”The extreme brittleness of the glass of the pumice,
as the result of its sudden cooling
would facilitate it’s pulverization;
and as it was reduced to powder
it would remain longer in the atmosphere,
and be swept farther.”
“(T)he elongated and the very thin particles,
would float almost indefinitely,
and would not find any place in the masses of dust
collected around the volcano.’
(Judd, J. W (1888)
The August 1883 eruption of Krakatoa spewed 21 cubic kilometres of rock fragments into the air. Air currents lifted the lightest material, glass dust, high into the atmosphere. On the other side of the world, sunlight filtered through this glassy veil. In London, the most destructive volcanic eruption in recent history revealed itself through extraordinary sunsets.
In the work Remarkable Sunsets – remarks on the unusual sunrises and sunsets which characterized the close of the year 1883, a distant natural disaster is examined through a lens of the sunset.
Remarkable Sunsets comments on the unusual sunrises and sunsets that marked the end of 1883, effectively examining the distant natural disaster through the lens of a sunset.
Et Alia will install an infrasound system in Kiasma Theatre that moves the air ten times more forcefully than conventional loudspeakers. Tatu Nenonen will compose a sound work for infrasound and organ.
